The Saga Begins

Star Wars (retroactively named Episode IV – A New Hope) was released in 1977. Created by visionary director George Lucas, the film introduced audiences to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), a humble moisture farmer living on the desert planet Tatooine. His life changes after he purchases two droids, R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), who possess the plans to the Galactic Empire’s greatest weapon, the Death Star.

The Empire’s stormtroopers follow their steps to Luke’s home and subsequently execute his aunt and uncle. With nowhere left to go, Luke travels with "Old Ben” Kenobi (Alec Guinness) to Mos Eisley, where the pair find Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), two smugglers. They offer to pay for transport to the planet Alderaan and board the Millennium Falcon; however, their destination is obliterated by the Empire’s weapon before they arrive. Lying in wait, the Death Star captures them with its tractor beam, and Luke states his intention to rescue the captured Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), who originally planted the schematics inside the droids.

After Kenobi sacrifices his life in a lightsaber duel with Darth Vader (David Prowse/James Earl Jones), the group — which includes Leia — heads to Yavin IV, the location of the Rebel Alliance’s base. Joining forces with the dissenters, they use the stolen plans to launch a strategic attack on the Death Star.
