Who Is Black Adam?

Known for his intense rivalry with Shazam / Captain Marvel (Billy Batson), Black Adam (Teth-Adam / Theo Adam) is an anti-hero who appears on the pages of DC Comics publications. His early appearances in The Marvel Family, a comic series by the now-defunct Fawcett Comics, saw him presented as an unambiguous supervillain; however, when DC Comics acquired the rights to the character in the ’70s, new writers made the decision to give him a more heroic backstory, detouring significantly from the intentions of original creators Otto Binder and C.C. Beck.

According to the continuity of modern comics, Black Adam was born a slave in the fictional country of Kahndaq, which is located in Egypt. Most of his life was spent suffering under the strong arm of dictators, and only he and his nephew Aman managed to survive. Unfortunately, during a successful attempt to rescue Aman, Adam was gravely injured.

Though it seemed that Adam’s time was at an end, salvation came in the form of the Rock of Eternity, the sanctuary of the wizard Shazam. Transported to this place by means of magic, Aman and his uncle encountered the powerful figure and were granted untold power, which healed Adam and allowed the pair to challenge the tyrants who had oppressed them.

This did not transpire as expected, however, for Adam disagreed with the peaceful methods proposed by Aman and killed him, thereby becoming the sole person to wield the power of Shazam. It was with this power that he freed Kahndaq, but his ambitions did not end there; he eventually set his sights on the Council of Eternity and murdered all but one of its members, the wizard Shazam, who banished him for centuries. Upon his eventual re-emergence, the title of champion had been given to another: Billy Batson.
