Welcome To Camp Crystal Lake

Released in 1980, the first entry in the Friday The 13th franchise was directed by Sean S. Cunningham. The film followed in the footsteps of Halloween (1978), a horror film directed by John Carpenter, and capitalized on the established audience interest.

Set in the late ‘70s, Friday The 13th centers around the reopened Camp Crystal Lake. This camp has a troubled past, a past submerged in the murder of two counsellors — Barry Jackson (Willie Adams) and Claudette Hayes (Debra S. Hayes) — and the death of a young boy called Jason Vorhees (Ari Lehman), who drowned in the lake. Decades after these tragic incidents, a batch of fresh-faced counsellors arrives: Ned (Mark Nelson), Jack (Kevin Bacon), Bill (Harry Crosby), Marcie (Jeannine Taylor), Brenda (Laurie Bartram), and Alice (Adrienne King). However, they find themselves being picked off one by one, hunted by a mysterious killer. It is soon revealed that Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer), the mother of the drowned child, is the one responsible for the murders, seeking revenge against those whom she perceives as neglectful. Alice, having escaped the mad woman’s clutches, manages to decapitate her, but she is attacked by a decomposed Jason, who emerges from Crystal Lake. Nevertheless, she survives and is left wondering whether he is truly alive or a figment of her overactive imagination.

Following the successful box-office performance of the first installment, the franchise expanded to other forms of media. To this day, there have been a whole host of sequels, TV series, books, and video games.
