Welcome To Berk

Released in 2010, How To Train Your Dragon is an animated film by DreamWorks Animation. The movie, directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, draws inspiration from author Cressida Cowell’s children’s book of the same name, which came out in 2003.

Set in Berk, a small Viking village on an isolated island, the plot follows a young teenager called Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Jay Baruchel). He is the son of the chieftain, Stoick The Vast (Gerard Butler), and is regarded as physically incapable of battling dragons, a challenge the village often faces. Nevertheless, he possesses a sharp mind and studies under Gobber The Belch (Craig Ferguson), a blacksmith. His tutelage finally pays dividends when he shoots down the legendary Night Fury with his bolas; however, he lacks the stomach to finish the job and decides to set the creature loose.

Throughout the course of the story, Hiccup befriends the non-violent dragon and names it “Toothless”. His interactions with the creature give him a greater understanding of their behaviours, knowledge that helps him excel during his dragon-fighting training. Eventually, Hiccup is acknowledged as the best of his class — which consists of Astrid (America Ferrera), Fishlegs (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), Ruffnut (Kristen Wiig), Tuffnut (T.J. Miller), and Snotlout (Jonah Hill) — and is told that he must kill a Monstrous Nightmare dragon to graduate. Unwilling to do so, he attempts to run away with Toothless, but he is caught in the process by Astrid. After convincing her of the Night Fury’s innocence, they discover the existence of the Red Death, a massive dragon that has been forcing the smaller ones to feed it. But how will they persuade the village to let go of their disdain? And how will they defeat the Red Death?

Following the success of the first installment, the franchise spawned a number of sequels: How To Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and The Hidden World (2019). These follow-ups continue the story of Hiccup and the relationship between the villagers of Berk and the dragons.
