The Man Of Metal

Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby, Iron Man made his debut in Marvel’s Tales Of Suspense #39 (1963). A founding member of the Avengers (alongside Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp, and the Hulk), he later received his own self-titled comic series in 1968.

Tony Stark (the hero’s civilian identity) became Iron Man after he was captured by Wong-Chu, a local warlord and underling of the Manderin. The terrorist forced him to create a weapon of mass destruction with the assistance of a physicist called Yin Sen. However, Tony developed an arc reactor that could be used to power a powerful suit of armour and escaped.

Throughout the history of the character, Tony Stark’s stories have dealt with many real-world issues, including alcoholism and war profiteering. One of the most popular story arcs is writer David Michelinie and illustrator Bob Layton’s “Demon In A Bottle” (1979), which centred around Tony’s alcohol addiction.

In 2008, Iron Man was brought to the big screen in a live-action film of the same name. Starring Robert Downey Jr., the movie launched the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since then, Tony has featured in multiple solo and ensemble movies: Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013), Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
