A Generation-Spanning Narrative

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, one of the most famous Japanese manga series in the world, made its debut in the magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump in the late ’80s. Created by Hirohiko Araki, who acted as both writer and illustrator, the story is split into nine distinct narrative threads (Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, Stardust Crusaders, Diamond Is Unbreakable, Golden Wind, Stone Ocean, Steel Ball Run, JoJolian, and JOJOLANDS), each of which shifts the focus to a new individual with the nickname “JoJo”.

While immersed in this fictional world, readers follow the long-lasting legacy of the Joestar family, who are unanimously recognized by their trademark birthmark (which takes the form of a star above their left shoulder). Much of the story centers on their generational antagonism with the descendants of Dio Brando, the adopted brother of Jonathan Joestar. After Dio is brought into the family, he attempts to become the new heir by taking the position from Jonathan. His mission ultimately fails; however, he manages to destroy the Joestar estate with vampiric abilities granted by a Stone Mask. Left without a home and knowing that Dio will stop at nothing to expand his influence over the wider world, Jonathan embarks on his own journey to master the Hamon, a form of martial arts that allows its user to convert their body’s energy into sunlight.

In 1993, the classic manga was translated to anime format by producer A.P.P.P. This 13-episode adaptation focused on the plot of Stardust Crusaders, the aforementioned Phantom Blood storyline being explored in a 2007 animated film.
