A Gentleman Thief

Created by François Uzan and George Kay, Lupin is a live-action TV series that debuted on the Netflix streaming platform in 2021. The show centers around Assane Diop (Omar Sy), a gentleman thief who draws inspiration from author Maurice Leblanc’s fictional character Arsène Lupin.

During his early childhood, Assane watched as his father, Babakar Diop (Fargass Assandé), was framed for the theft of a diamond necklace and sent to prison. Shame overwhelming him, Babakar committed suicide by hanging himself inside his cell. Decades after this tragic incident, Assane seeks vengeance upon his father’s condemner, the opulent businessman Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre). He takes on the persona of a thief in the vein of a character from a book that his father gave him and puts his skills to good use by setting out to expose Hubert’s many crimes.

Upon the show’s release, it became one of Netflix’s most successful, ranking among its top ten in the US. Overall, Lupin sits beside Bridgerton as one of the platform’s best debuts. As a result of this incredible success, the show has received multiple seasons and been watched by millions of viewers, many of whom have given overwhelmingly positive reviews.
