Become A Planeswalker

In 1993, Wizards Of The Coast released Magic: The Gathering (MTG), a collectible card game that was created by Richard Garfield. Feeling dissatisfied with the experience offered by Dungeons & Dragons (a table-top RPG), Garfield began developing his own game, one that he named Five Magics. Eventually, this concept found its way to Peter Adkinson, who had recently established Wizards Of The Coast. The first of its kind, the game became an immense success after it was produced, attracting millions of players from around the globe.

While taking part in MTG, players assume the role of a Planeswalker, a powerful being that exists in the multiverse. Their job is to defeat other players by reducing their “life total” from 20 to zero — which can be accomplished through using spells, artifacts, and creatures — or forcing them to draw from an empty deck. There are two core types of cards: lands and spells. The former is used to generate magical energy for casting spells, while the latter uses said magical energy (or “mana”) to cast powerful spells.

Over time, the MTG experience has expanded substantially, coinciding with the release of expansion sets, which provide new cards. Modern iterations of the game, such as Online and Arena, also allow players to compete with each other digitally.
