Who Is Marc Spector?

Marc Spector (the character known as Moon Knight) made his first comic-book appearance in writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin’s Werewolf By Night #32 (1975). In this narrative, he was depicted as a mercenary attempting to capture the eponymous character, who Marc was misled into believing was a monster. The following issue saw the white-caped mercenary aligning with Jack Russell, the human alter ego of Werewolf By Night, to defy the sinister organization called the Committee.

Having made an impression on both readers and the character’s creators, Moon Knight’s story continued in further solo titles, which expanded upon his origins. The son of a rabbi, Marc became a successful mercenary after being a Marine and CIA operative. His path toward heroism began during a job in Sudan, where Raoul Bushman, another mercenary, killed the archaeologist Dr. Alraune. Appalled by these actions, Marc rescued the archaeologist’s daughter, Marlene; however, he was mortally wounded by Bushman. Prior to his passing, Marc found himself drawn to a tomb overseen by Khonshu. The Egyptian god revived him and requested that he become the “moon’s knight”, his sole purpose to protect the innocent.

After returning to the United States, the newly motivated Marc invested his substantial wealth — gained from years of mercenary work — into his vigilante career and enlisted the help of Marlene and his colleague Jean-Paul "Frenchie" DuChamp. He also developed his distinct split personalities: Jake Lockley (a taxicab driver), Steven Grant (an affluent businessman), and Mr. Knight (a suit-wearing consultant).

The character was translated to live-action format with the release of the Disney+ TV series Moon Knight. Starring Oscar Isaac in the title role, the show shows Marc’s struggles as he attempts to reconcile his multiple identities and accept the revelation that he is more than an ordinary man.
