A Gothic Tale

Created by John Logan, Penny Dreadful is a horror TV series that first aired in 2014 on Showtime. The show draws inspiration from 19th-century Gothic fiction, introducing audiences to a whole host of recognisable characters: Count Dracula (Christian Camargo), Abraham Van Helsing (David Warner), Renfield (Samuel Barnett), Dr. Seward (Patti LuPone), Mina Harker (Olivia Llewellyn), Dorian Grey (Reeve Carney), Henry Jekyll (Shazad Latif), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Frankenstein’s monster (Rory Kinnear). Viewers may recognise some of these names from literary works such as Dracula (by Bram Stoker), Frankenstein (by Mary Shelley), Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde (by Louis Stevenson), and The Picture Of Dorian Gray (by Oscar Wilde).

Penny Dreadful starts in 19th-century London as Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) accepts a job to find the daughter of Malcolm Murry (Timothy Dalton), who has supposedly been taken by an unknown creature. This pursuit brings Chandler into contact with Victor Frankenstein, a young doctor responsible for the creation of an undead monster.

The original show ran for a total of three seasons, concluding in 2016. However, a spin-off series debuted in 2020: City Of Angels. Set in 1938, the first and only season explores the city of Los Angeles and the influence of Mexican-American folklore during the time period. Like its predecessor, the spin-off features an expansive cast: Natalie Dormer (as Magda), Daniel Zovatto (as Tiago Vega), Kerry Bishé (as Molly Finnister), Adriana Barraza (as Maria Vega), and others.
