An Extra-Terrestrial Conspiracy

Created by game developer Rare, the first installment in the Perfect Dark series was released in 2000 on the Nintendo 64 console. The plot focuses on Joanna Dark, an employee of the Carrington Institute during the year 2023, as she is sent on a mission to rescue Dr. Caroll from dataDyne, a rival company. It is soon revealed that Dr. Caroll is an AI whom dataDyne created for an alien race known as the Skedar in return for alien technology that would make them the biggest corporation on the planet. Joanna must stop this from coming to pass, navigating a number of unique levels and wielding an arsenal of powerful weaponry.

In 2005, a second entry in the first-person-shooter franchise made its debut as a launch title for the Xbox 360: Perfect Dark Zero. Functioning as a prequel, the game features the return of Joanna Dark, who is a bounty hunter at this stage of her life. She works alongside her father, Jack, and a computer hacker called Chandra Sekhar.

In addition to the games themselves, the franchise has been expanded with novels and comic books, each of which expands upon the lore in new ways. Writer Stewart Taylor worked alongside Dave Roberts and Alwyn Talbot to create Graduation Day and Hunting Season, two comics that were released in 2000. These explore events before and after the first game.
