A Pirate’s Life For Me

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, the first instalment in the franchise, was released in 2003. Directed by Gore Verbinski, the film tells the story of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) as they attempt to liberate Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) from the clutches of Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Barbossa is the captain of the Black Pearl, a ship that was formerly owned by Sparrow, and he is committed to lifting the curse that transforms all of the crew into skeletons when submerged in moonlight. To do this, he needs the blood of a Turner, which he believes Elizabeth to be.

Dead Man’s Chest (2006) continued the story of these legendary pirates, introducing none other than Davy Jones (Billy Nighy). Sparrow previously made a deal with the tentacle-faced captain, a deal that requires him to serve on Jones’s ship, the Flying Dutchman. However, when Bootstrap Bill Turner (Stellan Skarsgård) boards the Black Pearl and asks him to fulfil his end of the bargain, he refuses. As a result of his actions, he is relentlessly pursued by the Kraken, which seeks to drag him to Davy Jones’s Locker.

There have been a number of sequels since the release of the first two films: At World’s End (2007), On Stranger Tides (2011), and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). Verbinski took on directorial duties for the first three instalments and achieved critical acclaim.
