The Vicious And The Controversial

Formed in 1975, the Sex Pistols were an influential band that hailed from London. Their original line-up was composed of John “Johnny Rotten” Lyndon (vocals), Steve Jones (guitars), Paul Cook (drums), and Glen Matlock (bass). Simon Ritchie, known widely as Sid Vicious, replaced Matlock two years after the band’s conception.

Throughout the band’s short stint in the music industry, they released only one studio album: Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols (1977). This album featured a number of new songs as well as the controversial “God Save The Queen,” a single that became infamous for its vulgarity and criticism of the monarchy. Notably, this single is acknowledged as being the most heavily censored record in British history, having been banned by the BBC and every independent radio station.

In 1980, a mockumentary film titled The Great Rock ‘N’ Roll Swindle was released. Directed by Julien Temple, the movie primarily centers on the point of view of Malcolm McLaren, the manager of the Sex Pistols at the time. The plot — which features Jones (the Crook), Cook (the Tea-Maker), and Vicious (the Gimmick) in frontline roles — depicts a fictional retelling of the band’s history, focusing on their formation and breakup. McLaren (the Embezzler) is presented as a puppet master who uses them to further his own pursuit of financial gain.

Temple revisited the story of the band in 2000, releasing a follow-up film called The Filth And The Fury. Unlike its predecessor, this production explores the unique perspective of the band and avoids the biases held by McLaren.
