Enter The Swamp

Based on the book by author William Steig, the first film in the Shrek franchise was released in 2001. Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson took on directorial responsibility, bringing the fairytale to life with the help of Mike Myers (the voice of Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona).

At the start of the film, the eponymous character, a green-skinned ogre, lives peacefully in his swamp. Unfortunately, a myriad of fantasy creatures — such as the Big Bad Wolf (Aron Warner), Pinocchio (Cody Cameron), and the Three Blind Mice — start arriving en masse, having been exiled by Lord Farquaad Of Duloc (John Lithgow). Shrek, unwilling to share his personal space, travels to Farquaad so that he can ask him to remove the exiles from his home. He encounters Donkey on the path to Duloc, and the talkative mule becomes his guide. After winning a tournament, the pair are chosen to rescue Princess Fiona, whom Farquaad intends to marry. In return, Shrek can have his swamp back. However, the task is anything but easy, as the princess is guarded by a fire-breathing dragon.

Following the huge critical and commercial success of the first installment, multiple sequels were developed: Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek The Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010). There has also been a spin-off film that focuses on the franchise’s resident feline, Puss In Boots (Antonio Banderas).
