Welcome To The Forest

Founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio based out of Tokyo. Throughout the studio’s existence, they have released a variety of critically acclaimed feature films: Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind (1984), Laputa: Castle In The Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Grave Of The Fireflies (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Porco Rosso (1992), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), Tales From Earthsea (2006), Ponyo (2008), The Wind Rises (2013), and more.

One of the first movies by the studio, My Neighbor Totoro centers around Satsuki and Mei, the daughters of a scientist, as they await the recovery of their sick mother. Living in a country house, the two girls encounter the spirits from the neighboring forest, including the eponymous character. Totoro, a large cat-like spirit, has since become the company’s mascot, featuring in their logo and other marketing material.

Released in 2001, Spirited Away is perhaps the most recognisable film in Studio Ghibli’s library and is regarded as one of the best animated works ever created. The story follows Chihiro, a young girl, as she attempts to liberate herself and her parents (who were turned into pigs) from a resort for members of the spirit world. Along the way, she meets a whole host of colorful characters: Haku, Kaonashi, Bôh, Yubaba, Lin, Zeniba, and Kamajī — among others.
