The Sith Return

Over two decades after the release of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), George Lucas returned to the director’s seat to helm the prequel trilogy. The first entry was titled Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) and was released in 1999.

The story begins as Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his master, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), attempt to negotiate peace with the Trade Federation on behalf of the Galactic Republic. However, their mission fails when the mysterious Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid), who is responsible for the hostile presence above the planet Naboo, orders the Trade Federation to launch their army of battle droids and execute the Jedi. Luckily, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon escape to the planet’s surface, where they meet Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), an outcasted member of the native Gungan people. With his help, they successfully rescue Queen Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) and depart the planet on her ship.

While attempting to pass the Trade Federation’s blockade, the Royal Starship is damaged. This forces them to land on a nearby planet, Tatooine, in order to purchase replacement parts. Here they meet Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), a slave of a junk dealer called Watto (Andy Secombe). Sensing a strong affinity with the Force and believing that he is the Chosen One, Qui-Gon decides to bring Anakin to Coruscant so that he can be trained as a Jedi. The Jedi Council initially refuses Qui-Gon's request, but his death at the hands of Darth Maul (Ray Park) influences Master Yoda (Frank Oz) to allow Obi-Wan to take the boy under his wing.
